A footballer's professional career begins at a very young age. There are many PSL footballers who left their academic education at school level or undergraduate.
However, some PSL footballers over the years were able to go on and complete their degrees in academia. Most of these athletes have since went to break the stereotype that footballers lack brains.
In South Africa we currently hear a lot of depressing riches to rags stories but in the case of former Bidvest Wits defender Kevin Rafferty the situation is different. Having enjoyed a successful career spanning for over thirteen years, his most impressive spell came in 1995 during his time at Bidvest Wits where he went to win the Coca Cola Cup and the BP Top eight.
After reaching legendary status at Bidvest Wits he would then go to join Moroka Swallows where he spent the last two years of his career before deciding to retire at the age of 32 years. Upon retirement his focus shifted to the cooperate world and football never saw him again. We have since went to learn that the former Bidvest Wits defender holds a BSC degree from Wits University and an MBA with a specialisation in environmental sciences from Rhodes Business School.
Furthermore we would go to learn that Kevin Rafferty currently works as a senior lecturer at Rhodes Business School. We would also go to learn that he previously spent 7 years lecturing in the department of information systems at Rhodes. According to reports prior to moving to Rhodes he spent 5 years as a project manager in people development for the Information Technology sector in Gauteng.
With Kevin Rafferty's current occupation finally revealed at this point in time it is without a doubt that he is one of the most successful and educated former footballers in South Africa.
