In South Africa, football is one of the most-played sports. Like how basketball is treated in the U.S., it is more than just a game. Without nicknames, this beautiful game wouldn't be the same.
As a professional football player, you're bound to get a nickname. No matter how hard you try to get rid of it, it will always be a part of you.
In the past few years, a number of PSL stars have gotten nicknames that reflect their unique personalities and, mostly, how they play the game. As one of the most well-known teams in South African football, the Kaizer Chiefs, we take a look at their players and their funny nicknames.
1. Khama Billiat
The former Warriors captain is known for being smart and quick on his feet. Because of this, people call him "Gaucho," which comes from Ronaldinho's full name.
Billiat even gave one of his cars the name Gaucho to make it more personal.
2. Njabulo Ngcobo
On a good day, Njabulo Ngcobo can make even the most dangerous attacks stop, which is why people call him "Roadblock."
3. Keagan Dolly
Dolly's style of play is similar to Lionel Messi's because of his small size, lightning-fast speed, and great technique.
Dolly is called the "South African Lionel Messi" by a lot of football fans in the country.
5. Bernard Parker
Die Hond is the nickname that the Kaizer Chiefs captain got when he was playing football on the streets of Reiger Park. Because he was so talented, his friends would often tell him, "You are a top dog."
When he got there, his friend who spoke Afrikaans would say, "Here comes the horse."
6. Nkosiphile Ngcobo
The product of the Kaizer Chiefs Development Academy may be small, but he has a big heart and was the key to Kaizer Chiefs' success last season.
Because of how hard he worked, he got the nickname "Mshini," which means "machine" in a loose sense.
