Obviously, this is not good news for Mamelodi, who also has a Sundowns Share Points agreement with Stellenbosch.
Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 in the late DStv Premiership match on Saturday night at the Danie Craven Stadium, according to the official results.
Stellenbosch had lost their previous six games with the DStv Premiership champions, and this was the first time in their history that they had not suffered a defeat against them.
Mamelodi Sundowns draw 1-1 with Stellenbosch.
It was a breezy evening in Stellenbosch, with rain threatening overhead, and Haashim Domingo had a good chance for the visitors in the fourth minute, but his effort went wide of the post.
When Lyle Lakay took a free kick in the 20th minute, it looked like the home team would have a problem, but Robyn Johannes was able to clear the ball ahead of an eagerly awaiting Mosa Lebusa.
During the 27th minute, Grant Kekana came near to scoring, but his shot was diverted behind, and from the resultant corner, Themba Zwane missed the target.
Mendieta and Du Preez both missed long-range chances at the half-hour mark, and Sage Stephens had to be on his toes to deny Thabiso Kutumela in the 33rd minute after being called into action.
Stellies were granted a penalty in the 42nd minute after Khuliso Mudau fouled Du Preez in the box. Du Preez's quickness continued to cause issues for the hosts. As a result, Mendieta took advantage of the situation and sent Mweene the wrong way to give Stellies a 1-0 lead at the half-time interval.
The visitors created early chances in the second half, with Lebusa shooting wide in the 48th minute and Kutumela missing a similar opportunity three minutes later.
Lakay scored Sundowns' equalizer in the 59th minute with a left footed drive from just outside the box, beating Stephens to the ball. 1-1.
As Sundowns pressed for the lead, Lakay's free kick in the 66th minute came up just inches short of the target. Thapelo Morena had a shot on goal in the 76th minute, but Stephens made a comfortable stop.
Lakay's deft effort in the 82nd minute caused Stephens some difficulty, but the Stellies' goalie was able to gather the ball on the second attempt. Morena's long-range attempt, which came two minutes later, was consistently wide.
Kermit can be substituted. Erasmus' looping free kick in the 86th minute was just a little bit too high for the goalkeeper.
As the game came to a close, the points were evenly shared (1-1).
