Moerane was one of the ANC comrades who was supposed to contest for the position of chairperson in the Greater Johannesburg regional conference when he got involved in an accident last week.
He was admitted into the intensive care unit at Milpark Hospital, were efforts to fight for his life were fruitless.
In Tuesday, there were rumours that he had passed on, but ANC spokesperson, Pule Mabe refuted the claims and argued that Mpo Moerane was still alive, however he is unconscious.
But from the look of the faces of his family members showed that they had been crying for a long time. Critics argue that it was true that the ANC heavyweight was struggling to stay alive when rumors of his untimely death started making waves on social media.
Mpho Moerane becomes the second ANC heavyweight, and former mayor of Johannesburg to have died after being involved in a horrible accident.
A few months back, Jolidee Matongo who had only served a month as Johannesburg mayor died in a horrible accident, and this has led many to question what it really happening within ANC following these accidents claiming lives of comrades.
The ANC comrade succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The former mayor of Johannesburg Mpho Moerane is said to have died at 17:54pm at the Milpark Hospital. His family was at his bedside at the time of his passing.
Unfortunate passing of former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moerane was announced by his family, through family spokesperson Mike Maike.
He announced his passing on Wednesday evening. Moerane has been hospitalised last week after a car accident while he was traveling alone towards Sunninghill a Suburb in Johannesburg.
