Many footballers enjoy legendary statuses while still active, a rare few go on to continue with that legacy even post retirement. It has been known that a vast majority of yesteryear and current footballers mostly retire with absolutely nothing.
Still talking about footballers who have been declared bankrupt after football, we might as well add the name Willem Vries.
Willem Vries is regarded as a club legend at Blomfontein Celtics, during his time at Siwelele he went to make over 300 appearances and held the record for most appearances before his record was broken by goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb.
In a past interview Vries has revealed that he was not earning much during his playing days, he stated that he used to earn R2500 and the highest salary he has ever received was R4500. Following his retirement he was left with absolutely nothing but as a family he had to seek employment. He would then work at Siwelele Park as a gardener and his former team would afford him a salary of R4500.
As of recently he states that he is unable to work as he is not of good health but the Celtics management would reveal that they still offer him his salary and advised him to go apply for SASSA.
Vries describes his current struggles as hard, revealing that he does not even have a television set to watch his favourite sport and that if anyone could ever visit him in his home they would cry as his living conditions does not show that he is a former footballer as he has nothing to show for it.
