Hlongwane is South Africa's next big star | Opinion.

From last season already, you could see glimpses of Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s goal-scoring instinct as he gave defenders a horrid time, together with partner-in-crime Thabiso Kutumela.

With the latter having left Maritzburg United, and Judas Moseamedi following suit, the spotlight has fallen firmly on the Pietermaritzburg-born lad to lead the line for coach Ernst Middendorp’s side.

He is also emerging as one of the strikers that South Africa is pinning its hopes on, as Bafana Bafana’s quest for a place in next year’s World Cup looks on course, thanks in no small part to his goal that helped coach Hugo Broos’ charges to a 1-0 win over Ghana.

It’s a new-look Bafana, there is fresh energy on the pitch, belief is starting to return from despondent South Africans, even if slightly, and Ethiopia better watch out for the upcoming back to-back qualifiers within the next week.

In previewing these do-or-die clashes, Soccer Laduma’s Delmain Faver spoke to the 21-year-old about his steady progress, avoiding the spotlight and the goals he so badly wants to score… nope, achieve… this season.
