Terrence Mashego rises to the occasion on national team debut.

Cape Town City left back Terrence Mashego got a chance to play in the national team after he received a national team call from Hugo Broos. Mashego was one of the new and surprise inclusions in the national team. The last time Bafana Bafana played, in the FIFA World Cup Qualifies against Ghana and Zimbabwe respectively, the national team deployed Nyiko Mobbie to the left as the was no recognized left back in the squad other than Kaizer Chiefs defender Sibusiso Mabiliso who is currently not playing at Kaizer Chiefs and is subsequently playing second fiddle to veteran defender Sfiso Hlanti, who replaced him in the current squad.

With the inclusion of two left backs in the team, it was about time Hugo Broos played a recognized left back which is left footed. Hugo Broos called up Sfiso Hlanti and Terrence Mashego as the two recognized left backs in the DSTV Premier Soccer League, snapping Lyle Lakay with many asking questions about the exclusion of the Mamelodi Sundowns left back who is one of the few players to have already registered over eight (8) games so far this season. Between Mashego and Hlanti, someone was to start at the left back and Nyiko Mobbie would have to face it out with Thapelo Morena for the right back role.

In the recent win against Ethiopia, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos gave Terrence Mashego a chance to make his national team debut. The Mamelodi born left made no mistake the entire game. Mashego knew very well that a lot was expected of him in the match and he did his name no wrong. Mashego was very solid in terms of defending and starting attacks after winning possession back for Bafana Bafana. Selected before veteran Sfiso Hlanti, Hugo Broos was showing signs of what he said when he said that he will be playing the youth.

Bafana Bafana were victories by three goals to one (3 - 1) in Ethiopia and will be flying back home to take on the same opponents at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday. Goals from Teboho Mokoena, Mothobi Mvala and Evidence Makgopa were enough to secure the three points for Bafana Bafana and help cement their place at the top of their group. Mashego was not the only who performed very well for the national team, goalkeeper and skipper Ronwen Williams kept Bafana Bafana in the game with two very good saves in the first half of the encounter.
