Benni McCarthy Defends Kaizer Chiefs Over Covid-19 Crisis

The head coach of AmaZulu Benni McCarthy has come in defence of Kaizer Chiefs over the club's Covid-19 crisis.

Amakhosi failed to honour two of their previous games against Cape Town City on Saturday and Golden Arrows on Wednesday.

This comes after the club has been hit with the outbreak of Covid-19 that saw 31+5=36 players test positive to the virus.

That resulted for the club to close its training bases after they did not have enough players and technical team members to honour games.

Speaking after the game against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday evening, McCarthy insisted that Chiefs should not be forced to play, to field weaker players or play a weak team over something that is affecting the whole world.

However the coach admitted that if all teams are following the Covid-19 safety protocols he does not see the need for matches to be cancelled.

He added that they are professionals who do everything to protect their players and make sure that they stay fit to enjoy football and keep the league alive amid the pandemic.

The coach said Chiefs were just unfortunate that almost their squad was infected.

"You can’t ask them to go and out MDC team or not enough players out to perform at the level which is quite unfair," he said.

Amakhosi are at a risk of being docked points following the club's failure to honour two of their previous games.

McCarthy added that he hopes that the right thing gets done by the authorities and Amakhosi will not get punished over something that is affecting the whole world.

He concluded that they have to show compassion because people's lives are more important than football.

After they did not play their mid week game against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, Amakhosi dropped to the fifth position in the DStv premiership log table.
