Steven Gerrard has been named the next manager of Aston Villa, according to a statement posted on the club's website on Thursday.
The former Liverpool captain arrived at Villa Park after leading Glasgow Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last season.
CEO Christian Purslow commented on the appointment, saying that the 41-year-old has the experience that the club appreciates.
"The Board of Aston Villa is delighted to announce Steven as our new Head Coach," he said on the Villa website.
"Steven began guiding and developing outstanding young players in the Liverpool FC Academy after his illustrious playing career, which is experience we value highly at Aston Villa."
"He then made the bold choice to put himself through the rigors of the Scottish Old Firm's tough and high-pressure environment." His subsequent success in winning the Premiership with Glasgow Rangers, as well as his European expertise, drew our attention.
"It's evident from our conversations with Steven that his coaching objectives, philosophy, and principles are identical to those of Aston Villa.
"We are ecstatic that he has agreed to lead us in the next phase of our ambitious objectives, as we strive to build on the momentum made since Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens took control of the club in 2018."
Gerrard, for one, expressed his eagerness to assist the club in achieving its goals.
"I am incredibly happy to become the next Head Coach of Aston Villa, a club with a strong history and heritage in English football," he said.
"It was clear from my meetings with Nassef, Wes, and the rest of the Board how ambitious their intentions for the club are, and I am looking forward to assisting them in achieving their goals."
"I'd want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Glasgow Rangers for providing me with the opportunity to lead such a historic football club." It will always retain a special place in my heart that I was able to assist them in achieving a league-record-breaking 55th title. I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.”
