Many in South Africa believes that if it was not for Doctor Irvin Khoza Orlando Pirates Football Club won't be existing today, the Iron Duke as he is known to South African football lovers has devoted more than four decades of his life to the Soweto based club. He first arrived at the club back in the late 70s as the club's secretary who also helped the club financially as well, before taking over as the club's owner in 1991.
His status as Pirates owner opened doors for him to become the Chairman of Orlando Pirates Football Club and the Premier Soccer League(PSL), which by virtue makes him the Deputy President of the South African Football Association(SAFA).
Other than being instrumental in securing the Premier Soccer League sponsorship, Khoza was also the Chairman of the 2010 FIFA World Cup committee that brought the tournament to South Africa in 2010 making it the first male senior FIFA World Cup to be played in the country. The Pirates hierarchy had two wives Yvonne Mantwa Kgotleng-Khoza and Matina Khoza who sadly lost their lives on the 17th January 2020 and 23rd of July 2020, and they blessed him with seven children with one of them sadly passing away.
Today marks Khoza's 74th birthday and with messages pouring in from all over the world, his fellow PSL Chairman and owner Shauwn Mkhize who is well known by the name MamMkhize took to her Instagram story @kwa_mammkhize to wish the legend of South African football a happy birthday.
For me, Khoza still has a lot to offer Pirates and South African football, and with his years of experience in the game, South African football is indeed in good hands.
We as BlitzNewsZA would also like to take this moment and wish Dr. Irvin Khoza a happy birthday, and may the Almighty God bless him with more years.
