Opinion: 2 Things Man United need to do if they want to win any trophy this season

After a tumultuous start to the season in which many Manchester United fans lauded Ole Gunner Solskjaer, it's fair to say that the aura and optimism surrounding Manchester United have vanished following their midweek Uefa Champions League loss to Young Boys Bern.

If the loss taught anyone anything, it's that things must change if Manchester United are to win any silverware this season.

With that out of the way, I'll share my thoughts on the two things I believe must change if Manchester United are to win a trophy this season.

1. Sign as soon as possible a world-class defensive midfielder.

Despite the plethora of talents available to Ole Gunner Solskjaer, Manchester United are still in need of a proper defensive midfielder. Fred has proven to be untrustworthy and inconsistent, while Scott Mc Tominnay has been plagued by injuries in recent years.

Nemanja Matic, on the other hand, is no longer the player he once was, with age and wear and tear taking their toll on the Serbian.

The 20-time Premier League champions blew a golden opportunity by failing to sign a new defensive midfielder last summer, and failure to do so in the upcoming January transfer window could be detrimental to the club's chances of winning any silverware this season.

2. Fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replace him with a tactically minded manager.

If there is one thing Ole Gunner Solskjaer has proven time and time again since taking over at Old Trafford, it is that he is not good enough tactically.

The Norwegian simply lacks the tactical nous and ability to read games that world-class managers like Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel, and Jurgen Klopp do. With the 47-year-old having to rely on the individual brilliance of his players to win games on occasion.

Solskjaer has a plethora of world-class players at his disposal, but he simply does not know how to utilize them. If United are to win a trophy this season, they must first detach their emotions and let go of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has done an outstanding job of steadying the ship at the club.

However, United require more than stability at the moment; they require trophies, and I don't see that happening with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still in charge.
