Is there a curse among South African footballers? Very few go to enjoy a successful career after retiring in the sport. Still talking about footballers who went broke upon retirement we might as well add the name Papi Mbele, a one time Mamelodi Sundowns player.
Papi Mbele made a name for himself while playing for Vaal Professionals in the late 1990s, he would later go to join Ajax Cape Town.
During his playing days at Ajax he was one of the most promising youngest, his only dream was to earn an overseas move to join Ajax Amsterdam. He would later join Mamelodi Sundowns during the era of then owner Natasia Tschillas.
With six months left in his contract at Chloorkop he decided to join Moroka Swallows, a move even to this day he still regret. A week later he went to learn that Mamelodi Sundowns were now under new management after Billionaire Patrice Motsepe acquired ownership of the team.
He later went to enjoy his last playing days in the Mvela Golden League with Nathi Lions before deciding to call it a day at the age of 28. Years later he went to attempt a football comeback with no success, he has since earned himself a job in the construction industry where he works as a safety rep in a company called Sedrate in Heilbron.
Papi is also involved in community football and has indicated that his lifestyle has never changed even upon retirement as he was saving his earnings.
