Bongani Zungu, a former Bafana Bafana midfielder, has replied to claims that his Rangers loan was terminated because to his party lifestyle and violation of Covid-19 regulations.

On loan from Amiens, Zungu spent six months with Scottish Premier League heavyweights Rangers, coached by England and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Rangers suspended the 29-year-old for six games after he and four of his teammates broke Covid-19 rules by attending an unauthorized house party in Glasgow.

He was chastised in the South African media for his supposed party lifestyle, and he was also chastised by Amiens coach Philippe Hinschberger for being overweight upon his return to the Ligue 1 club.

And Zungu has retaliated.

He told Soccer Laduma, "I want to tell my perspective of what happened when the media stated I went to a party.

"Do you have any idea how difficult it was for me to go there and not see anyone other than my teammates for almost six months? I was going to training, the game, and then home, and doing the same thing over and over again.

"When I got into difficulty, I didn't mean for it to happen," Zungu added. I went to Calvin Bassey's house, thinking it would be safe because we test for Covid all the time at the club. I was taken aback when I heard there was a party. I took a photo with someone there, but the whole thing got blown out of proportion, especially in South Africa, and now everyone thinks it's because of that that I didn't stay at Rangers. However, I am unconcerned about other people's viewpoints. My on-field experience wasn't ideal, but the team was winning, and I had to accept that Steven Gerrard couldn't simply modify the successful recipe.

Rangers certainly paid a loan fee, indicating that the coach was seriously interested. However, making it permanent became prohibitively expensive.
