Opinion| Is Percy Tau the most overrated South African football player ever?

When we talk about the face of the South African national football team we talk about Percy Tau because he played in the English premier league and some people see him as the best South African player.

But is he the most Overrated South African football player ever or he is one of the best players that South African football has ever produced?

He was once a Mamelodi Sundowns player and his contributions to the team attracted interest from overseas. He inscribed his name into the Mamelodi Sundowns history books and he will be remembered by many Mamelodi Sundowns fans for many years to come.

Tau is a right-winger and even though many might argue that Right-wingers are not expected to score many goals, they actually are expected to assist and score. The only difference between them and strikers is that strikers don’t have to track back that much and they have to always be the target man. Messi is a right-winger, Neymar is a left-winger, Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah, etc are right wingers but they score more goals than strikers, which means being a winger doesn’t mean you can’t score many goals.

Percy Tau played in 102 matches for Mamelodi Sundowns and he scored 24 goals and assisted 27. Those are his stats in his entire stay at Mamelodi Sundowns. This season only, Peter Shalulile has already scored 24 goals and the season hasn’t ended yet. He has already equaled Tau’s whole Mamelodi Sundowns goals tally. Is it unfair on Tau to be compared to this unstoppable player?

Tau was then signed by Brighton which loaned him out to the Belgian club, Royale Union Saint Gilloise which was playing in the second division of the Belgium soccer league. Well, he, unfortunately, couldn’t help to take it to the 1st tier league even though he scored 13 goals and assisted the same number of goals for them. That was his best tally, 26 goal contributions in a second-tier league. His form then started dropping.

At Club Brugge, he scored 4 goals and assisted 8 in 30 matches. At Brighton he assisted 1 goal and scored 0 goals in 6 matches, they gave him 6 chances but he couldn’t deliver so they stopped giving him chances. At Al-Ahly he now has 6 goals and 2 assists in 17 matches. While he has 13 goals in 35 matches in the national team, and more than 80% of his goals were scored against teams ranked above 100 in FIFA rankings.

I know he’s a good player but I think he’s overrated and that isn’t good because a lot would be expected from him.
