The new formation that’s costing Chiefs games has been revealed and explained

If you’ve been following Kaizer Chiefs in the 2021/22 season, then you will realize a few changes in how they’re playing and their approach to their games. Chiefs brought in nine new faces to bolster their squad, following their painful loss in the CAF Champions League final against Al Ahly a few months ago. Chiefs brought Stuart Baxter to replace Gavin Hunt, following a horrible past campaign, however, it seems like he hasn’t found his feet at Naturena. Even though this is his second stint within the club, after a successful first stint, that brought a lot of smiles in Chiefs fans. Nevertheless, the fans have put all of that in the past where it belongs. All they want now is positive results as they’re tired of seeing their DStv Premiership arch rivals winning trophies.

Many fans have realized that Baxter’s approach towards games might be the reason behind the previous losses this far in this campaign. As they feel that he’s using a lot of defenders in his starting line-up and less offensive players. This has led to the Soweto giants conceding goals non-stop and not being able to score goals. If a team wants to win matches then it has to shut the backdoor and constantly attack its opponents and take its chances. Baxter has been utilizing the same 3-4-3 formation which has proved to be rather risky for his side and cost them games.

This is the same formation he used in their 2-0 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns two weeks ago. Also, this past weekend the Englishman chose to use the same formation against Royal AM and Chiefs conceded four goals and managed to only score one. “Playing with three centre-backs? We played against Baroka in the last 15 minutes and even against Sundowns, we conceded goals by people changing the play from one side to the other and our distances were a little bit wrong and then you get a cross in, and we ended being a man short at the centre,” said Baxter talking to the media, as he was explaining the 3-4-3 formation and why it has gone wrong at Naturena.

Baxter feels that Chiefs will get used to playing with three centre-backs, as it is something that he’s implementing in his squad. He feels that the 3-4-3 formation works for Amakhosi, the only downfall is that they’re lacking when it comes to their defense. This was visible in the previous games against Sundowns, Baroka FC, and even Royal AM. However, he believes in the formation and he knows that it will lead to a free-scoring Chiefs. “The 3-4-3, the two wing-backs, getting higher and wide when we have the ball helped us a lot. We’ve scored and we’ve had joy with it… We are having a problem with higher distances. So our idea there was to go with three centre-backs. And we can take that wing-back around and kill the space. Though it has worked, but we’ve still conceded goals in poor situations for us,” said Baxter talking to the media.
