Match of the Day has set a new viewership record on BBC iPlayer thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's second appearance for Manchester United. United's superstar was making his first appearance for the club since re-signing from Juventus on transfer deadline day, 12 years after departing for Real Madrid. Ronaldo gave United supporters exactly what they wanted on his second debut, scoring twice in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Because the game was not broadcast live in the United Kingdom owing to the 3 p.m. blackout, Match of the Day on Saturday night served as the first opportunity for many to witness the great man in action again. And, as Lineker reported, they showed up in droves. People who tuned in late to the BBC's highlights show had to go to the iPlayer to rewind and watch the Ronaldo highlights because of the US Open tennis final, which saw 18-year-old British qualifier Emma Raducanu beat Leylah Fernandez in straight sets on Channel 4 to become the first ever qualifier to win a grand slam.
According to presenter Lineker, Saturday's broadcast of Match of the Day received 1.8 million requests, including 587,000 from those under the age of 35, making it the show's most popular episode ever. Along with the numbers, he tweeted: "On BBC iPlayer alone, it has had over 2 million views. @BBCMOTD is a program with the strength of Cristiano, the majesty of Emma Raducanu, and, dare I say, a nice show. Thank you for watching, and it's still on BBC iPlayer."
One has to wonder just how influential Ronaldo is, after all he is the man responsible for causing Coca-Cola to lose $4 billion, after he pushed aside a Coca-Cola bottle in a press conference. Also to add on to that, he is the man with the most followers on Instagram with 315 million followers. In his first televised game since his comeback, Ronaldo is likely to start for United in the Champions League against Young Boys on Tuesday night, live on SuperSport.
