Mathoho Expected to Play Mentor to Kaizer Chiefs Youngsters

Kaizer Chiefs' veteran defender Erick Mathoho is expected to play mentor to the club's youngsters.

Following a massive squad overhaul that was done at Amakhosi at the beginning of last month, where several players were released by the club, Mathoho seems to have survived the axe.

The veteran defender has been at the club for more than a decade.

Despite struggling for form in the past seasons, the player is understood to be staying for the 2022/23 season.

The 31-year old still has one year left on his contract with the club and he has been seen on the club's social media platforms going hard at work preparing for the next season, and that has given a huge hint that he will remain with the club next season.

Speaking to the Sowetan former Chiefs defender Nhlanhla Kubheka has weighed in on Mathoho's stay with the club and has highlighted key roles that the experienced defender will play.

"You must keep those players who you think are influential in terms of guiding the youngsters and I think Mathoho fits that profile," said Kubheka.

He added that every team need experienced player and even if he is not playing but his presence in the bench can do wonders.

Kubheka has explained that Mathoho's role will be to mentor the young players and also the new ones.
