Cyril Ramaphosa Reacts To Mamelodi Sundowns's Historic Win

South Africa can be referred to as a progressive country and this reflects in the country's sports. We are one of the most foward thinking countries in the continent and one of the few with the financial means to make a women's league happen, however things haven't been going as fast as expected. Team like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs don't have women's teams to date and this is definitely something that has to change in the near future.

The Mamelodi Sundowns ladies team made history on Friday evening as they won the CAF Champions league trophy. This is a huge accomplishment for the country and more importantly for the progress of women within the country and this is what can be considered a national accomplishment. They are the first ladies team from South Africa to win this trophy.

Cyril Ramaphosa took to social media to share a message to the ladies team as he congratulated them on their accomplishments. The President shared that they deserve recognition for representing the country well and making history. This is a moment reminiscent of when Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns won the trophy, regardless of which team one supports, this is a big win for South Africa as a whole.

"National congratulations to the women of Mamelodi Sundowns for your triumph in the CAF Women’s Champions League. You’ve done your club and country proud. Well done and enjoy your celebration."

Football fans around the country also took to social media to congratulate the team as they won 2-0 in the finals. This means that Mamelodi Sundowns joins an elite list of teams around the world who have won a continental trophy with the male and female teams.

There has been reports of a regulation that could be implemented by CAF effective as of next season to push more teams to establish female teams. According to reports teams who don't have a ladies team will be barred from participating in the continental competitions which will pile the pressure on the like of Pirates and Chiefs.
