Hugo Broos was commenting on what really transpired after he won AFCON with the indomitable lions Cameron. Why did he leave Cameroon. The was a lot of pressure after they won the AFCON title, players started to relax, I guess it was expected. Cameroon was on the spotlight now.
It was becoming difficult to have the same ambitions they had before. In one of the trips back to Cameroon one of Broos assistant, who knows Cameroon very well. He said to Broos "I believe this is the right time for you to leave your job. Hugo Broos looked at him straight into his eyes.I don't understand we stand a good chance to qualify for the world cup.
He asked the assistant why should I go now. The assistant was adamant. " Listen to me,trust me, I see a lot of problems coming your way now on. You have to leave.
Big problems were starting to manifest. When Broos first came to Cameroon the was lack of discipline. Players were doing as they please, they will come to training late. He manage to fix all of that. However some players started to lose that discipline.
Many players wanted to play. They refuse to be benched.
"They started to accuse me that i asked for money to put players in the starting line-up" said Broos.
Things were no longer the same, the mood had changed in the camp. It was bad. I could not recognise my players anymore. It was like a soup opera he said.
They started losing games. They were kicked out of the world cup qualifiers. Everything fell apart, it was over for him.
Broos wants to replicate the same ambitions that made Cameroon win the AFCON in 2017. He wants a "Bafana" team that will fight for every space. He does not want a situation were only 4 or 5 players are willing to die for the team, but all players in the starting line up. He wants a team were any player in the starting eleven can score a goal.
