Orlando Pirates youth player slits own throat after taking “paradise” drug

Orlando Pirates FC development player Luyanda Mthembu’s bright career in football ended abruptly when he slit his own throat after taking a drug called “paradise”.

The incident took place on Friday night at the 17-year-old’s home in Umlazi G section. It has left the public angry at the people who sell drugs in the area.

Mthembu’s uncle Musa said his nephew was in the bedroom when he killed himself.

Luyanda was in his usual happy mood when he came back from town, he added.

Later on, Musa said they were shocked when Luyanda started acting strangely, saying police were chasing him.

“He started pointing at the wall, telling us that police were chasing him when there were no police in the house.”

The family suspected that he might have taken the “paradise” drug – which has reportedly grown in popularity.

Their suspicions were confirmed when they found three “paradise” pills on his bed.

“We then stood guard and blocked him from running out of the house. After a few minutes, he was calm, and we were allowed to get fresh air outside the house,” said Musa.

Luyanda then went to his bedroom, locked the door and allegedly slit his throat, dying instantly.

“We heard him scream like a goat. When we broke down [the door], we found him lying in a pool of blood, with the kitchen knife still in his hand,” said Musa.

The drug, which is popular among the youth in many townships, makes users hallucinate, according to community leader Lindani Zulu.

“Some of them would say they see snakes and run for their lives when there are no snakes,” said Zulu.

He said the police must clamp down on drug dealers who sell these drugs to young people.

Luyanda’s coach, Junior Bhengu, described him as a skilful player.

“I think we as a society do not do enough to dissuade young people from doing bad things such as drugs.

“I am shattered by Luyanda’s death,” said Bhengu.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident.

“The police have opened an investigation docket after the teenager committed suicide,” Mbele confirmed.
