The 2022 World Cup qualifiers have turned on its head following the incident that occurred between South Africa and Ghana this past weekend. Who knew that a penalty was going to differentiate the winner at the Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday? This proved to be a group of death, as it had Ghana, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe. Both Bafana Bafana and Black Stars were tied up on 13 points, however, the Milovan Rajevac’s men have moved to the next round. Many fans were pleased with how things transpired between Bafana and Ghana. As they felt that it was a poorly officiated game that saw alleged favouritism happen throughout the match. Meanwhile, others were calling for a match-fixing incident that was meant to allegedly benefit Ghana.
The Senegalese referee Ndiaya Maguetta has been in the spotlight, following the alleged bogus penalty he gave to Ghana to make sure that they win the match by 1-0. After numerous replays, the football fraternity saw that it was a “soft penalty” as Daniel Amartey went on the ground following a slight touch from Bafana’s Rushine de Reuck. That’s when the whole issue started as fans feel that Bafana needs a rematch as they cannot be robbed in the crucial game. This was a final Group G FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier and a lot was riding on for both countries. Hence, millions of people tuned in to see which team will top the group and move to the next stage of the qualifiers.
To their surprise, they saw many loopholes that make African football lose its value in the world. Once the officiating becomes horrible, that’s when the whole game gets affected immensely. Maguette’s last officiated in a Ghana match last year against Sudan at the Cape Coast Stadium for the 2022 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
