Pirates advance to the African competition after their opponents pulled out from their return leg

Orlando Pirates have got themselves an early Christmas present in the CAF Confederation Cup as their opponents LPRC Oilers has withdrawn from the African competition. This means that the Buccaneers have moved to the group stages without playing the return leg of their play-offs. Pirates travelled to Liberia the previous weekend to battle Oilers at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium in Monrovia in the first leg. The goals were scored by Tshegofatso Mabasa and Fortune Makaringe.

The Sea Robbers were expected to welcome Oilers at Orlando Stadium for the return leg of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, however, it has been called off. This means Pirates will move to the group stages of the 2021/22 CAF Confederation Cup and their opponents are expected to be announced soon (after the playoffs are completed). Also, this has been confirmed by LPRC Oilers on their social media platforms. “Kindly note that we have been informed of the withdrawal of LPRC Oilers from the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup this season,” read the official statement from the Liberian outfits.

The Buccaneers had to update their fans on social media following the statement from the Confederation of African Football about the match being called off. It is believed that the reason behind this whole thing is the high infection rate of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the Liberian club would rather be safe than sorry. “CAF has received a letter from the Liberia FA confirming the Liberia FA confirming the withdrawal of LPRC Oilers from the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup this season. Consequently, this weekend’s scheduled fixture between Orlando Pirates and LPRC Oilers has been cancelled in accordance to the Regulations of the competition,” read the Pirates official statement confirming the CAF Confederation Cup return leg has been cancelled between the Soweto giants and Oilers.
