Edouard Mendy should have been added to the shortlist for the award

Mendy made several saves which led to him making a clean sheet.

The omission of Edouard Mendy from the Ballon d'Or shortlist perplexes Antonio Rudiger.

Following the 29-year-outstanding old's performance in Chelsea's 1-0 victory against Brentford on Saturday, the Germany international admitted as much.

After Chelsea seized the lead through Ben Chilwell on the stroke of half-time, Mendy made several key saves to deny Thomas Frank's side a chance to level the score.

Rudiger, buoyed by his performance, moved to social media to ask why the African goalkeeper did not make the cut for the world's top footballers.

"Can someone please explain why he hasn't been nominated for the Ballon d'Or?" What an amazing performance... "Edouard Mendy," wrote the former AS Roma and VfB Stuttgart midfielder on Twitter.

France Football unveiled the 30-man list for football's most prestigious individual award on Friday, with the Senegal international noticeably absent.

Following his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Ligue 1 side Rennes, Mendy has quickly established himself as an important member of Thomas Tuchel's squad.

He helped the Londoners win the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Super Cup in the 2020-21 season, while keeping Spain international Kepa Arrizabalaga on the bench.

Tuchel praised his goalkeeper's performance as well.

"They were always dangerous on set pieces, they put a lot of free-kicks, corners, free-kicks into your box so it's a constant threat," he said on the club website. "He was very strong and very concentrated also in our build-up play, a very good performance."

Meanwhile, ex-England midfielder Gary Neville praised the Senegalese as the key to the Blues' survival in the Premier League.

On Sky Sports, Neville stated, "He was simply magnificent."

"If you want to win the championship, you'll have games where you don't deserve to win but your goalie makes two or three world-class saves."

"He's the one who's made a difference." Last season, Kepa in goal for Chelsea was a major issue, with goals coming in far too easily.

"It's a lot more difficult to score against Chelsea, not just because Thomas Tuchel has been brought in, but also because of the goalie."

When Chelsea takes on Malmo FF of Sweden in the Champions League on Wednesday, Mendy is anticipated to start in goal.
