Mamelodi Sundowns have had a wonderful run in the DStv Premiership and even the CAF Champions League. However, one thing for sure that many players have had to face at Sundowns is playing fewer games than they want. Meanwhile, others don’t even get any chances to play even a single match. Now, Downs co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has explained the reasons why they were looking to loan Promise Mkhuma last season. Also, what could have led to the deal not being successful.
According to Mngqithi, Mkhuma’s style of play is close to the likes of Neo Maema and even Thabiso Kutumela, however, he’s more direct with his game. So Sundowns have a variety of players to choose from when it comes to each game. It’s not easy breaking into the matchday squad, hence Mkhuma will have to fight for his spot at Sundowns. Even though they’re looking forward to giving him some time on the pitch but it won’t be enough for a player of his caliber. “He picked up the injury recently. He has been fighting very hard and he has been showing some very good signs. We know what he is capable of. Even the thinking of him going out on loan was to try and maximize the number of minutes he can play this season, so he is amongst the players who can really fight for their place in the team because we know what he can bring,” said Mngqithi talking to the media.
The former AmaZulu head coach stated that they wanted to send Mkhuma on loan whereby he has a higher chance of making it to the starting line-up. If he remains at Sundowns then things will get difficult as it’s not easy to get game time at Chloorkop. Mngqithi felt that he’s still a youngster and needs to be in a team whereby he will play regularly. As that will make him a better player and he will learn a lot of things about his game and what he needs to work on. Mngqithi stated that Mkhuma is making an excellent recovery as he has raised his hand during training sessions. They’re hoping to give him a run when the time is right. “He is still very young and it’s not helping him not to play regularly, which is why we wanted him to go out where he can play regularly because it’s not easy for him to find a place and stay regularly in the team. But we are happy with the progress he is making in training and we are hopeful when he comes back from this injury, he might give us a thing or two,” said Mngqithi talking to the media.
