See what Banyana Coach said about her team after their 2-1 victory over Nigeria.
ELLIS ON BANYANA WIN OVER NIGERIA
Banyana Banyana earned a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in their opening game at WAFCON 2022. Banyana Banyana's head coach, Desiree Ellis, praised the effort of her players but noted that they will now move their attention to their upcoming match.
Banyana were able to pull off the crucial victory against the reigning champions thanks to goals scored by Jermaine Seoposenwe and Hilda Magaia.
Ellis stated that it was always going to be important to win the first game, and she praised her team for the way in which they carried out their strategy to the letter.
"Look, as I said in the (pre-match) press conference, that the first game of the tournament is also always very important, and what made the game bigger was because we're playing Nigeria," Ellis said in the post-match presser after the game. "Look, as I said in the (pre-match) press conference, that the first game of the tournament is also always very important," Ellis said.
"We were aware that we needed to get off to a strong beginning in order to build our confidence and maintain our forward momentum.
"And I believed that the players were outstanding, and I believed that they carried out the strategy to the letter. It's possible that we could have played a lot more balls through in the first half, but we did a much better job of executing in the second half.
"But the victory was extremely significant. We anticipated that it would be a significant matchup, and the opposing team's head coach mentioned the importance of gaining three points. Acquiring these three points has proven to be of the utmost importance to us, as it will determine how the rest of the tournament will go for us.
"And this game, like Linda mentioned, we will focus on the next one, and the next one, and we will take it day by day,"
