Sport: Sofia Kenin distinguished by WTA as tennis player of the year

The American Sofia Kenin was named tennis player of the year, in a vote in which the French Kristina Mladenovic and the Hungarian Timea Babos appear as the best pair, reported today the WTA, organization that manages the women's circuit.

Kenin, 22, won the Australian Open this year, the first Grand Slam tournament, and was a runner-up at Roland Garros, in a year marked by the cancellation of numerous tournaments due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The tennis player, born in Moscow, finished the year in fourth place in the women's 'ranking', led by Australian Ashleigh Barty, followed by Romanian Simona Halep and Japanese Naomi Osaka, who complete the front trio.

The pair formed by Mladenovic and Babos is distinguished as the best, in a year in which they won the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

The WTA awards are chosen by a panel of journalists and encompass five categories, with Polish Iga Swiatek being the most advanced player, Argentine Nadia Podoroska, as the revelation of the year, and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, as the return of the year.
