The list of players that will feature in the DSTV Compact cup has been released and the are many big names that are missing from the list and even though for some it came as a shock, I think it’s understandable.
The DSTV compact cup is a tournament in which four teams will compete against each other in the form of a top 4 tie. The two teams that win in each match will then face each other in the final and the winner will be crowned the 2022 DSTV compact cup final. I think the idea was great to have a tournament of this kind but the planning process was not carried out correctly and that is why there are some disappointments and surprises.
Even though the fans are looking forward to the tournament, the coaches are not happy that their players are going to play in this tournament. They stress that the players might get injured in the tournament and that will hit them hard if they want them to be fully fit in order to compete for the league. That is understandable because the coaches get sacked if the teams don’t perform well and win matches, so they can’t use the compact cup as an excuse, so they have to protect their players so that their jobs can also be safe.
For the fans, it’s a good move by the DSTV because the South African national team didn’t qualify for AFCON so at least the fans will still have something to look forward to since some only watch domestic football.
Almost all Mamelodi Sundowns players who are always in the starting lineup have been excluded including Shalulile, Zwane, Jali, Lakay, and Onyango, De Reuck is the only one who will participate in the tournament. This was to protect the players and make sure that they are available and fully fit when the league resumes. I think that is the reason why Khama Billiat is also absent from the list of the players who will play in the tournament, he was injured months ago and they don’t want him to be injured again before the league resumes because he’s in top form.
Here is the list of players below
