The Careless and reckless behaviour of a taxi driver took the life of a hardworking and dedicated Gauteng Police officer on duty. The Gauteng MEC of Community Safety Ms. Faith Mazibuko was lost for words when he learned the passing away of Gauteng Traffic Police officer Moses Nose Mathebula, and she appealed to all taxi owners to ensure that their motor vehicles are roadworthy upon embarking on trips. She felt many people are losing lives because many car owners fail to take their vehicles for service or checkups, the tragic death of the GTP officer proved why vehicles that are not serviced are a hazard to other road users and pedestrians. The officer was on duty on R551 when a taxi driver swerved into the left shoulder and the reckless driver tried to move into his lane, but the taxi didn't have enough mobility to avoid oncoming traffic, and it took out traffic officer Mathebula. He was rushed by his colleagues to the Clinic Naledi-Nkanyezi Private Hospital, but he lost his life while he was in the surgical ward. He suffered critical injuries to his skeletal structure, and it leads to an internal fracture. The taxi driver has been arrested by the Gauteng Traffic Police Department, and he faces many serious charges such as culpable homicide, driving an unroadworthy vehicle, reckless and negligent driving. We think the reckless taxi driver will face over a year in prison, and a large crowd of witnesses will put this case to bed after officer Mathebula was killed by an act to cause harm. The magistrate judge might not give the taxi driver a bail sentence if he has more than two counts of road charges by the Gauteng Traffic Police Department. We would love to send our condolences and respect to the family and friends of Moses Mathebula. May his soul rest in peace.
