Road Accident

Meet Simon The Man Who Survived Four Accidents In Life

Simon is living life to the full after surviving four accidents and losing two legs

Not one, not two, not three, but four. That’s how many car accidents Simon Shabangu has been involved in.

In the process the 44-year-old man from Tzaneen in Limpopo has lost both his legs.

But Shabangu has not let his bad luck on the road affect him. He is still living his life to the fullest.

On Saturday Shabangu cycled 38km with able-bodied cyclists in the rain for charity.

He was one of the people who donated wheelchairs to learners at Letaba Special School at the weekend.

He told Scrolla reporters that he had to cycle just to show disabled people that they could do anything they set their minds to.

Shabangu’s first accident happened in 1993 when he was just 16 and that accident broke his spinal cord.

At that time he still had both his legs, but one had to be amputated because of an infection.

He got into another accident in 1996 and sustained minor injuries after he was knocked down by a drunk driver.

In 2000 he was hit from the back by another intoxicated pensioner and by 2003 doctors were forced to remove his second leg, because of infections.

In 2008 he sustained minor injuries in yet another accident in Vosloorus Gauteng.

He believes that through his experiences God had been training him to be the voice of disabled people.

As a result he started an organisation called Ability Beyond Disability, which advocates for the rights of people living with a disability.

On Friday, 3 December, he will be representing disabled people in Mpumalanga parliament in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
