Man gunned down by 4 assailants at Berea Centre Mall

On Sunday; a 29 year-old man had been chatting to his friend who was sitting inside the vehicle that was parked outside a hairsalon along King Dinuzulu Road (previously Berea Road); in the CBD Durban; Kwazulu Natal; when they were accosted by 4 armed assailants.

The assailants opened fire and the man in the vehicle sped off leaving his friend behind; the friend ran towards a nearby Berea Centre; which has a Mall inside; in an attempt to seek refuge.

When the shooting started; the staff at the hairsalon ran towards the back of the shop; one of them felt a heaviness in her leg; they soon discovered that she had been injured during the shooting and she was rushed to hospital.

Meanwhile; the 4 assailants who were chasing the man outside the hairsalon; entered the mall and shot him four times on his stomach; he died at the scene of the incident inside the Mall.

The friend who sped off leaving him behind; drove directly to Umbilo police station to report the crime.

The Berea Centre Mall Director; Greg Bath; spoke to a local newspaper and told them that; the man ran into the Mall seeking refuge; but the 4 assailants who were chasing him; shot him inside the Mall.

Bath said; none of the Mall patrons were injured and the police took over the scene for investigation. He sent his condolences to the family of the deceased man.

The spokesperson for the SAPS in Kwazulu Natal; Police Captain Nqobile Gwala; confirmed that a murder case was opened by the victim's friend at Umbilo police station.

Gwala said the Umbilo police have opened an inquest docket for murder and attemoted murder; the police are seeking 4 armed assailants.

Gun violence in the Kwazulu Natal province is rampant. When will the police do an operation to disarm people with unlicensed firearms?
