The local newspaper learnt that there was a group of boys who were terrorising the community in the area; they were suspected of rape; murder; breaking and entering in people's houses in broad daylight.
They will steal people's property while everyone looked on and the community was paralysed by fear to retaliate. They were part of a feared gang that operated in Ntambanana.
On Friday members of the police went to the nearest bush which served as their hiding spot. A shoot out broke out between the thugs and the police and two of them died on the scene.
A community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity; said he does not believe that the thugs who were killed; worked alone because criminal incidents in the area are a daily thing.
"They work for someone. They would break and enter people's houses in broad daylight and walk away with property. They have also entered my house and took some things. They are known thugs in the area; it is hard to believe that it's over with the two who were shot by the police." Said the source.
"What is puzzling is that the thugs who were killed are young; with ages ranging between 25 and 29; which makes us believe that our suspicions are true; that they were working for someone." Said the source.
The local chief; Mchazeni Mthiyane said; he believes the criminal acts in the area will decrease with the death of the two thugs.
"I was even wishing to ask the government to send the SANDF; based on the way the community was living in fear of these thugs."
"I received far too many incidents of murder; rape and burglaries; where food and property was stolen." Said Mthiyane.
He said he tried to convene community structural meetings to find a resolution but nothing came out of it. The reports of abuse of people kept coming in.
He told the local newspaper that the thugs were allegedly staying in a nearby bush; where they kept all their stolen goods. They only came out of the bush to rob people.
Some of the property stolen from the community would be found in this bush.
The gory pictures of the thugs who were shot; were doing rounds on social media.
The spokesperson for the SAPS in Kwazulu Natal; Colonel Thembeka Mbele; could not be contacted by the local newspaper up until the time of print.
A police official from Ntambanana police station; who is not mandated to talk to the media; confirmed the incident.
