A 36-year-old suspect was taken into custody for having 214,98 kg of unprocessed platinum powder as the result of an intelligence-driven operation involving the Western and Eastern Cape Crime Intelligence on June 24, 2022, at around 8:00 in Melk Street, Maitland.

The commodities that were seized are yet unknown in terms of value. During the search of the property, the members seized equipment and an undisclosed sum of money. The defendant was detained on suspicion of possessing allegedly stolen property and violating the Precious Metal Act.
The suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court once charged with the alleged offenses.

Catalytic converters, lab apparatus, electrical connections and electrodes, platinum resistance thermometers, dental instruments, and jewelry all include platinum.
