RFDO calls for adequate housing and sanitation for farmworkers

CAPE TOWN - The Rural and Farmworkers Development Organization said that such a large number of farmworkers in the Western Cape were living in horrifying conditions.

The association's Billy Claasen said that it was about time that laborers approached satisfactory lodging and disinfection.

Claasen said that the South African Human Rights Commission would visit something like two cultivating networks in the Western Cape this week.

Farmworkers have shared pictures of shocking conditions, similar to the wrecked, obstructed and filthy latrines they were relied upon to use, just as openings in windows and roofs.

"Farmworkers are worn out on living in these sorts of conditions. Some of them are furious. Farmworkers stay in desperate conditions on certain homesteads and on certain ranches there are means and assets to redesign the houses on ranches. They can do it."

Claasen said that he had been immersed with calls from farmworkers with protests and supplications for help
