A routine Friday night shift for police officers Lieutenant Colonel Mandie Davel and Sergent Zandile Mofokeng took an unexpected turn when the two assisted a woman in giving birth at the Springs police station.

SAPS said a man and a heavily pregnant woman with labour pains arrived at the station around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, according to a social media post.

An ambulance was dispatched to the station, but the woman was already in labour, requiring Davel's experience as a midwife to intervene.

"Lieutenant Colonel Davel, who has midwifery skills and experience, took it upon herself to assist the woman in delivering the baby in the Community Service Centre (CSC) due to the severity of the woman's labour pains. Sergeant Mofokeng provided assistance to the officer "According to the police.
