Constable Donay Phillips from Sea Point Police station remembered. Thembisile Patekile, the Western Cape police commissioner, has promised that justice will be done for slain officer Constable Donay Phillips. Phillips was one of three people killed last Saturday at New Somerset Hospital. Former Vredenburg police officer Jean-Paul Malgas was arrested and charged with the murders.

Thembisile Patekile, the Western Cape police commissioner, has guaranteed the family of killed police officer Constable Donay Phillips that justice will be done. On Friday, Patekile delivered the keynote speaker at a special memorial service for Phillips. Phillips was one of three people killed last Saturday at New Somerset Hospital. The next day, he died from his injuries.

Patekile explained: He [Phillips] was a warrior for our democracy who touched the hearts of all of his colleagues. I get the impression that he was a well-liked individual. He went on to say that on the terrible day of Phillips' death, he acted bravely and battled to safeguard the country's democracy.

He gave his life to defend our country and democracy. Former Vredenburg police officer Jean-Paul Malgas was arrested and charged with the murders. Malgas appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday and dropped his bail application. Malgas, according to his counsel, suffered from serious depression.

Patekile explained: He will stand trial, and the courts will make their decision. I don't know about his sadness; all I know is that we apprehended someone who murdered one of our own.

Donay was eager to put himself on the line of duty to defend others and was senselessly and shamelessly killed in the prime of his life, and he has so much to achieve, Heather Tager, chairperson of the Sea Point Community Policing Forum, said.
