Johannesburg: Zimbabweans being chased down by South Africans in Turffontein

Several films are circulating online that were shared on Twitter by former CNN and BBC Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chino'no with the caption: "In South Africa, illegal immigrants, primarily Zimbabweans, are being pursued like animals." This has been going on since 2008, and @SADC News has done little to address the underlying problems. Zimbabweans' only way out and only answer is to #RegisterToVoteZW in large numbers for 2023."

In the footage, personnel of the South African Police Service can be seen on the scene detaining undocumented Zimbabweans who were selling tomatoes and vegetables at the market.

A gang of South Africans damages and burns the market booth while signing a petition demanding that immigrants return home. The general population has been at conflict with Zimbabweans living in South Africa, accusing them of overloading our hospitals, schools, and jails.

As the Zimbabwean economy continues to deteriorate, both nations will likely face tensions as a result of illegal migration and the politicization of the issue in the future elections in Zimbabwe in 2023 and South Africa in 2024.
