Thieves grab entire electricity substation outside Roodepoort school

The police are looking for criminals who uprooted and stole a brand new mini-substation belonging to City Power in Fleurhof Roodepoort.

As well as the criminal investigation, City Power has launched an internal investigation as the company thinks the theft could be an inside job.

The company is also appealing to members of the community to help find the thieves.

City Power’s spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the R500,000 mini-substation (MSS) was stolen at night last week outside Fleurhof Secondary school.

This happened a day after the new substation was installed, replacing a faulty one.

The MSS supplies power to the nearby school which is the only customer currently affected.

“We have opened a case of theft of essential infrastructure with the police and are hopeful that they will crack it,” said Mangena.

Mangena said the theft of our infrastructures like cables, substation doors, fuses, and busbars, has become so brazen and the perpetrators are heavily armed in some instances.

He said the area where this substation was stolen from is also known for cable theft.

“We don’t rule out the possibility of internal staff working with thugs which could be a worrying situation if our investigations reveal that,” Mangena said.

Another replacement has been positioned where it can be monitored by the school’s security.

City Power’s General Manager of Security Risk Management Sergeant Thela said the company has beefed up security in the area and other identified areas in the City of Johannesburg.

The company says anyone with information about the stolen transformer and the suspects is urged to call the nearest police station or City Power Security Risk Management control room at 011 490 7900, 011 490 7911, or 011 490 7553.
