ANALYSIS - Did Ramaphosa Make A Mistake By Relaxing Lockdown Restrictions? - OPINION

This article looks at whether Cyril Ramaphosa made a devastating mistake by reducing lockdown regulations in the midst of elections.

The third wave only recently settled, and with that South Africa was brought down to level 1 lockdown. Could this decision be a devastating one considering the fact that elections are going to be soon?

Experts had predicted that a 4th wave could be expected between December this year and in January next year. There is still potential that this could happen seeing that a lot of activities are happening right now, including the campaigns for the up and coming elections.

Was it also a political move to reduce lockdown regulations in order to allow for campaigns or was it the best decision to make?

Currently less than 1000 positive cases are being recorded on a daily average, but these numbers could sky rocket at any given moment, on the basis that people have more freedom.

Many individuals have also not received the vaccine making it, impossible to have a fully immune ready country. There are high numbers of vaccine hesitancy as people believe or think that the vaccine is not safe.

Borders to must places have also been opened, allowing in and out activity that could intruduce new variants of the virus. Most recently South Africa was removed from the red list from UK, aloowing individuals to travel to the UK and from the UK.

The hospitals are also not ready and fully equipped to cope of cases sky rocketed due to the campaigns and December activities.

In the times that South Africa was at its peak with cases, it was easy to establish that there were no spaces in hospitals often leading to shortages of beds.

After analysis it looks like the decision to relax lockdown regulations was a bad one, however the economy was currently not performing well under lockdown.

Many individuals were unable to work, a lot of jobs were lost, leaving people unemployed and forcing children to study from home, which might not have been convenient.

However these issues could have been dealt with at a later stage, the health of the people is what matters the most.

Do you think relaxing the lockdown restrictions was a good idea?
