Bus with 63 commuters travelling from Pretoria to Mpumalanga caught fire; 6 burnt beyond recognition

Scores of people travelling from Marabastad; west of Pretoria to Mpumalanga; using a Putco bus; were injured when it caught fire; on the R537 Moloto Road on Friday afternoon. 

Tshwane Emergency Services said; 6 of the passengers were found burnt beyond recognition; while 57 of them sustained injuries during the inferno.

Thabo Charles Mabaso; deputy chief of Tshwane Emergency services said; "The Putco bus caught fire at about 14:00 near Roodeplaat Dam."

On arrival at the scene; firefighters found only 14 of the injured passengers and were informed that the majority of them had already been taken by private emergency medical services ambulances and rushed to hospital.

Mabaso informed the local newpaper that out of the 14 injured passengers they found at the scene; 11 suffered minor injuries, two sustained moderate injuries, and one female patient had to be airlifted to Milpark Hospital in a critical condition. 

Following the extinguishing of the fiery bus; firefighters discovered charred human remains. A total of six commuters were found to have burnt beyond recognition along with the charred bus.

The driver informed; Mabaso that the bus suddenly caught fire while he was driving and he immediately stopped. 

According to the driver; the bus was carrying a load of 63 commuters travelling from Marabastad; Tshwane to Tweefontein; Mpumalanga.

Mabasa told the local newpaper that the cause of the fire was not known and that the deceased had not been identified.

The spokesperson for Tshwane metro police; Senior Superintendent; Issac Mahamba; said the road had been closed to traffic. Motorists were urged to avoid R573 and find alternative routes.
