Mazibuko responded that she only knew about "the character from a music genre known as amapiano."
"I only hear "John Wick" when people are dancing. "When they say John Wick has arrived, Basho bathi ufikile John Wick," she said.
For months, there had been outrage that "John Wick" was on the loose and allegedly responsible for the deaths of members of the so-called Boko Haram gang.
However, the police have not confirmed the existence of "John Wick" as reported by some concerned residents.
In October, Pretoria News quoted Police Minister Bheki Cele as saying, "We have heard the name, and until we find the person, we will keep chasing, but not only that, there are many other people, and I am not going to call names here."
However, Cele stated that the police were wary of being sent on a wild goose chase for people who did not exist.
Mazibuko stated that seven murder cases had been reported to the police, and it was determined that the suspects involved were four or more unknown individuals, and firearms of various calibres were used.
"As a result, the existence of 'John Wick,' as per the social media narrative, could not be confirmed," she explained.
So far, no arrests have been made in connection with any of the seven murders.
Mazibuko stated that there were no other vigilante groups in Mamelodi, as suggested by Shackleton.
"It is clear that many members of the public, particularly people living in Mamelodi, are satisfied and happy with the idea of vigilante justice taking place in that community, and that does not bode well in how they perceive the SAPS when it comes to dealing with safety in that particular area," Shackleton said.
"I would strongly urge the SAPS to bring these vigilantes to justice and to finally deal with gang violence in that specific area."
Mazibuko stated that community engagements were initiated to combat gang-related crimes through consultations with residents during a community imbizo.
"Police visibility in the area has also been increased due to the deployment of combat teams to patrol the area."
