The woman worked as a police reservist at the Diepkloof police station in Soweto. The owner of the Ford Mustang, her male companion, was considered to be a forex trader, while the gunman was a cab driver who was suspected of being the woman's ex-lover.
A video taken at the site shows a crowd encircling the car, which has two bloodied victims slumped inside.
When the driver of the car lost control of the vehicle, a minibus taxi was nearby.
According to a source, the cab driver was furious that the woman had abandoned him and found a new boyfriend.
According to Colonel Athlenda Mathe, a police spokesperson, the couple was shot on Soweto's Baragwanath Road.
She said that when she and a male reservist police officer attached to the Diepkloof Visible Policing Unit were traveling along the road, bullets were fired at them.
