A sombre mood was the order of the day at the accident scene where former Joburg Mayor, Mpho Moerane lost his life. Just before his memorial service was held, friends an family together with some of Moerane's colleagues visited the accident scene to lay some wreaths. As President Cyril Ramaphosa puts it, the death of former Johannesburg mayor is a big blow to the state. This was evident as an ANC Councillor collapsed as she was about to pay respect to the late Mpho Moerane. The woman fainted and had to be attended by emergency services. Many people are devastated! It is a numbing sadness indeed! Lebogang Maile on Mpho Moerane: “He is leaving a great legacy. He was a caring, very humble, committed servant of our people.” No wonder some of his colleagues are struggling to come to terms with his tragic death.

Moerane's wife looked defeated but calm as she was accompanied to lay wreaths at the accident scene. We also spotted an inconsolable Moerane's sister also collapsing. What a sad day for the Moeranes and the country as a whole.

We will miss his contribution to his political home, the African National Congress (ANC) and to the development of Johannesburg as one of our country’s and continent’s most important economic and cultural centres. May his soul rest in peace,” Ramaphosa tweeted. Mpho Moerane rose through the ranks, from the ANC's branches in Alexandra, to become City of Johannesburg Mayor, and he was well liked along the way.

Details of his accident remain sketchy and Moerane's family said they do not want ro speculation as to what happened. "All we know is that he hit a rock and the car overturned. That's what Mpho told us before he fell into a coma ", a family Spokesperson told the media.
Meanwhile, scores of people are expected to gather in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, for the memorial service of former Johannesburg Mayor, Mpho Moerane.
