In this part of the nation, female circumcision has been the talk of the town for quite some time. When a girl reaches the age of 12, she is circumcised and given away in arranged marriage to a man who is old enough to serve as her grandpa.
The women were dissatisfied with the treatment they were receiving.
Rebecca had been married to her husband since she was 18 years old. When she chose to aid other women who had been raped, the local men were not accepting of her protest, and she was battered until she was admitted to the local hospital.
When she was discharged from the hospital, she separated from her husband since he did not object when the local guys began beating her up. As a result, she fled and founded a hamlet named UMOJA, which means "no males are permitted." It was started by her in the year 2010.
She is regarded as the village's de facto leader.
She and other women who had survived domestic abuse banded together and began living on their own for the first time.
This is the location of the school.
She said that as Samburu women, they have no rights, and that if her husband wants to kill her, he may do so without repercussions since they are viewed as property.
The men were dissatisfied with this and desired to demolish their hamlet, but the ladies would not allow it.
They constructed their own homes with their own two hands.
They are skilled in the production of beaded jewelry.
They make a living by selling jewelry to tourists by the side of the road, and when the guys find out, they beat them and take their money away from them.
As a result, they established a market in their village as well since a school for their children, as they believe it is important for their children to be educated and exposed.
They are housed in mud huts. There is no way for a mature male to enter the village. If by chance a guy does manage to get into the hamlet he will be thrashed by all the ladies and thrown out naked.
She also had a meeting with Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
They have boyfriends who live outside of the community. In terms of security, the ladies work in shifts throughout the night to keep each other protected.
When I first came across this story, I couldn't believe that there was a site in Africa that was still thousands of years old.
