POLOKWANE- The police in Vhulaudzi outside Thohoyandou in the Vhembe District have opened a case of inquest following the death of 37 year old woman, who allegedly died after she was swept by the flooded river.
It is alleged that the deceased who is a resident of Vuvha village had in the early hours of yesterday, Monday 22 February 2021 (between 06:00- 07:00) transported her child to Tshedza main road in order for her to catch another transport to school. On her way back, she apparently found Mudzinga river which is crossing Tshedza village, already over flooding. She apparently attempted to cross but her vehicle was swept away.
The incident was noticed by passengers from a sand truck who were a distant away and notified the police.
Members of the South African Police Service Search and Rescue Team were notified and on arrival, the deceased’s vehicle was found trapped in tree trunks on the banks of the river. Her body was retrieved at a distance of about 3km from her vehicle.
Due to the heavy rains that continue to fall in some parts of the province, communities are urged to be wary of crossing rivers whose low bridges are covered with water as it is almost impossible to gauge the depth of the water.
