Flood warnings in South Africa were given out over a week ago, this was following the anticipation of the tropical cyclone coming from the Indian ocean. This cyclone was predicted to be going through Mozambique and affecting some parts of South Africa. It was seen in many videos from Mozambique that the cyclone really caused massive damage to the land and the people. South Africa only suffered less damage bu the weather conditions have lasted up until today.
While many thought that the worst was over, Mpumalanga experiences one of the worst floodings in years. The rainfall did not even last for a period of 2 hours but the amount of heavy rain that fell in that small-time period left many people amazed. The flood took over the streets of Nkomazi, A small district in Mpumalanga. This district is known to be the closest to Mozambique, this could have been the reason for such intense flash floods.
While the rainfall from last week came with a warning, the one that occurred on Monday in Mpumalanga was something totally unexpected. In just a space if 20 minutes, the rain had already started causing major flooding. The main problem is that the soil had already absorbed soo much rain during the last week of rainfall. Cars were stopped in the streets as the road was flooding with water and there was no way they could pass.
The picture above indicates what the flood was doing to the taxis of the Nkomazi region. The taxis were not able to pass the floods and those that attempted to go through such harsh environments were punished. The worst cases of them all were the busses that had no way of passing. These busses are massive and carry about 80 people from Nkomazi and surrounding areas. One of the buses was caught in the flash flood and people were faced with a matter of life and death.
Pictures like the one above were taken at several spots in Nkomazi as the flooding happened in many places. The bus above tried to pass the waters that filled the road as the bus driver thought the vehicle was big enough to perform such an act. to his disbelief, his decision landed people in a very bad situation. The bus failed to pass the water and was stopped in its track. Watter started rising and closed the door were people exit, resulting in people having to jump out using the windows of the bus.
The issue was the fact that the rain was too powerful for all the drainage channels to handle. The residents ended up leaving the bus in the water as the rain continued to pour. What they are happy about is that none of the people who were on the bus got harmed in any way. They successfully helped each other get out of a very tight spot as a community. What makes the residents angrier isn't he fact that the heavy rains were not reported
Although the whole flooding incident was very bad, the residents of the area were not harmed and people that were involved in the incident of the bus and taxi left and went home unharmed. The weather forecast still shows that rain is still coming and South Africans are now afraid.
What is your take on the matter? Do you think the residents could have been wanted of such heavy rains coming their way?
