Enyobeni tavern was a disaster waiting to happen. Check what was discovered about the building

The double-storey Enyobeni tavern in East London, where 21 young people died under mysterious circumstances, was illegally constructed and its renovations were never approved, according to the Buffalo City Municipality(BCM) . The tarven was a disaster waiting to happen. BCM spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said the municipality did not receive any land use application and no departure was granted for the operation of a tavern on the site. Calls for the owner to be arrested are mounting as more discoveries about his tavern are made.

At the moment, all Enyobeni tavern victims have finally been identified. The last body was identified on Wednesday evening. Independent research psychologist Melinda du Toit said we must use the tragedy at the Enyobeni tavern in East London, which left 21 young people dead, to start the conversation about alcohol consumption and safety with our children.

On Wednesday, more information emerged from sources including pathologists, provincial health departments, and anonymous officials. They have all presented theories which both overlap AND vary from each other. The official toxicology reports are due later in the week. According to several media houses, chemical poisoning has been identified as the cause of the deaths of 21 teenagers in the Enyobeni Tarvern tragedy. This chemical is yet to be identified by authorities.The community wants the owner found guilty.

Police refuse to comment on speculations

The SAPS in the Eastern Cape has expressed concerns about circulating rumours and media reports speculating on the cause of death in the Tavern Tragedy incident which occurred early Sunday morning in Scenery Park. The Police say as clearly articulated in the statement issued on Monday regarding the ongoing investigations, SAPS forensic investigators are still continuing with the investigation into the deaths of 21 children at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park.


Families of the 21 teenagers who died at EnyobeniTavern in Scenery Park, Eastern Cape, on Sunday met up with officials from the Buffalo City municipality. The government on Wednesday thanked those who had promised support in preparation for the funeral. Among them is Avbob, the funeral parlour, which has pledged burial costs support for each family.”

Funeral arrangements

Meanwhile, a mass funeral service for Enyobeni Tavern children will be held on Wednesday 6 July, after which government will assist families with transportation of remains for interment at burial sites of their choice.
