Cop suspended for allegedly raping male victim in the cop van
A cop who allegedly raped a male suspect he had just arrested in the back of a police van has been suspended.
The arrest follows an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) investigation.
The incident took place last Thursday when the male victim was arrested by the cop at a clothing store where security suspected that he wanted to steal clothes.
Police were called and the constable was assigned to investigate.
He arrested the man and allegedly took the suspect to a secluded gravel road where he made him watch porn on a cellphone before raping him.
On Monday morning, police management summarily suspended the police officer who was charged over the weekend.
“Due to the seriousness of the allegations levelled against the 31-year-old police constable an expeditious internal disciplinary process into the fitness of the member to be in the SAPS has been initiated,” said Western Cape provincial commissioner General Thembisile Patekile in a statement.
“Incidents like these adversely impact the relationship between police and communities. That is why it is crucial the investigations undertaken by Ipid get to the bottom of this. Police are expected to be protectors of the community.”
The cop will appear in court on Tuesday on charges of rape.
