Taxi passenger arrested with a black bag full of secrets

Members of various Ladysmith units were performing policing duties at the Tugela Toll Plaza at 10:00 a.m. yesterday when they pulled over a minibus taxi with fifteen passengers.

Officers discovered a black bag holding four laptops and a silver bag carrying one laptop when inspecting the passenger's luggage. Clear plastic was used to wrap all of the laptops. Both bags belonged to a Malawian national, according to the initial investigation. He was unable to present any paperwork or documents to prove ownership of the laptops when questioned.

The man then approached two police officers and offered them R1,000 in cash if they would let him go. The money was taken by the cops, and he was detained right away.

The lack of paperwork and the desire to pay a bride suggest that there is something secretive about the contents of the black bag.

The suspect was transported to the Besters police station and charged with bribery and possession of suspected stolen stuff.

The laptops and money were turned in as evidence at the police station. The suspect will be in court tomorrow in Ladysmith Magistrate's Court.
