Murder

Newborn buried alive, miraculously survives

A 34 year old woman packed her newborn baby in a suitcase and buried her in a shallow grave in Xholobe village in Tsomo.

The baby was born on Monday morning. A few hours later the mother of the child dug a shallow grave next to the grave of her parents (grandparents of the baby) in the backyard of her home.

When the chief of the area noticed that the woman was no longer pregnant and he saw no sign of a child, he became suspicious. He contacted the police on Tuesday afternoon.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said that the mother placed the baby in a suitcase immediately after giving birth and then buried it in a shallow grave in the backyard. Police found the grave and after digging discovered the baby who was wrapped in a blanket. The baby was miraculously alive and had to be taken to hospital.

The mother was arrested and taken to hospital for medical care and is under police guard. A case of attempted murder is being investigated.
