The Manenberg area has been turned upside down my members of the South African Police Services who are part of the Anti-Gang Unit. The Anti-Gang Unit members have been deployed in the area as they try to bring an end to gang violence which has been the talk of the day.
According to a media statement which was published by the members of the South African Police Services, an operation which was carried out on the 20th of September 2021 lead to the recovery of firearms. Information was made available to the police officers who were carrying out patrols in the community, regarding a premise where firearms were being stored.
The members made a follow up on the information which they had received and proceeded to certain road where the premise was located and a search was conducted. During a search at the premise, the members found two 9mm pistols and several rounds of ammunition which are being stored at the house.
A 19 year old suspect who was found in possession of the firearms was immediately arrested by the police officers. He is being detained by the police while the firearms have been taken for a ballistic testing to a certain if they were using other violent crimes which will carry out in the country.
Once charges have been placed on the suspect, he is set to make an appearance at the Athlone Magistrate Court. The suspect will be facing charges of being in possession of an unlicensed fire and ammunition.
The possibility of further charges being placed upon him cannot be ruled out as the ballistic testing might expose other violent crimes the suspect was involved in.
Members of the public know that the sting operation which is being carried out will make the communities a safer place. Gang members on the other hand know that their days might be numbered as they might soon find themselves behind prison bars.
